Dear WFHS Parents and Guardians,

As we dive into a new school year, we’re excited about the opportunities that lie ahead for our students. The beginning of the school year is a critical time for establishing routines, setting goals, and ensuring that our Saints are on a path to success. Here are some tips to help your student start the year off strong and maintain momentum throughout the school year.

1. Establish a Consistent Routine

A consistent daily routine is key to academic success. Encourage your student to:

  • Set a Regular Sleep Schedule: Adequate sleep is essential for focus and learning.

  • Create a Dedicated Study Space: A quiet, organized space free of distractions can greatly improve concentration.

  • Plan for Success: Use a planner or digital calendar to track assignments, tests, and extracurricular activities.

2. Encourage Active Engagement in Class

Students who actively participate in class discussions and activities are more likely to retain information and perform well on assessments. Encourage your student to:

  • Ask Questions: Clarifying doubts in real time helps solidify understanding.

  • Take Notes: Effective note-taking during class can make studying for exams much easier.

  • Be Prepared: Ensure that your student comes to class with all necessary materials and has completed any assigned homework.

3. Set Academic and Personal Goals

Goal-setting helps students stay motivated and focused. Work with your student to:

  • Set SMART Goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound goals can guide them through the school year.

  • Monitor Progress: Regularly review goals and adjust as necessary.

  • Celebrate Achievements: Recognizing accomplishments, no matter how small, can boost confidence and encourage continued effort.

4. Foster Open Communication

Communication between students, parents, and teachers is crucial. We encourage you to:

  • Stay Informed: Regularly check OnCourse for updates on your student's grades and attendance. Check the WFHS website, Instagram, and Facebook page for updates on daily schedules, upcoming events, etc.

  • Reach Out: Don’t hesitate to contact teachers, school counselors, or administrators with concerns about your student’s progress.

  • Discuss the Day: Regular conversations about school can help you stay connected with your student’s academic and social life.

5. Promote a Healthy Balance

While academics are important, maintaining a healthy balance between schoolwork and personal time is essential for overall well-being. Encourage your student to:

  • Engage in Extracurricular Activities: Participation in clubs, sports, or other interests can provide a well-rounded experience.

  • Prioritize Self-Care: Encourage time for relaxation, hobbies, and physical activity.

  • Avoid Overcommitting: Help your student manage their time to prevent burnout.

6. Support a Growth Mindset

Students with a growth mindset believe that effort and persistence can lead to improvement. Help your student:

  • Embrace Challenges: Encourage them to view difficulties as opportunities to learn and grow.

  • Learn from Mistakes: Mistakes are part of the learning process; discuss what can be learned from setbacks.

  • Stay Positive: Encourage a positive attitude towards school and learning.

We’re here to support you and your student every step of the way. Let’s work together to make this school year the best one yet!
